NEWS2 Calculator

NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score 2) is the standardised UK scoring system for detecting clinical deterioration. It scores seven physiological parameters — respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, supplemental oxygen, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate, level of consciousness, and temperature — to generate a total score linked to clinical response thresholds. Pre-hospital use helps paramedics identify sepsis, deteriorating patients, and priority for hospital notification.

The clinical response prompt updates in real time, showing the recommended response for the aggregate score — from routine monitoring through to emergency response.

NEWS2 Scale 1 applies to the majority of patients. Scale 2 is used for patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure — typically those with COPD or other conditions where a lower target oxygen saturation range (88–92%) is appropriate.
