Today we are launching Standby Point, a free UK Discord community for student paramedics, NQPs, ambulance clinicians, volunteers and educators.
It's somewhere to ask the question you nearly kept to yourself, share the things you wish somebody had told you, and talk to people who understand the job.
Why Standby Point?
A standby point is where an ambulance crew waits between jobs. In theory, anyway. If you've worked on an ambulance, you'll know how often that part actually happens. The other meaning is the reason we chose it. Wherever you are in your training or career, there should be somebody standing by who has faced the same question before.
Maybe you're about to start your first placement and don't know what to take. Maybe you're halfway through an NQP portfolio, or you've been on the road for years and have something useful to pass on. Standby Point is student-first, but it isn't student-only. Applicants, apprentices, NQPs, ambulance support roles, volunteer responders, experienced clinicians, educators and mentors are all welcome.
What's inside?
- Ask the Crew is where you can post questions about study, placement, clinical learning, careers, wellbeing and kit.
- Crew Library keeps useful, reviewed resources from disappearing into months of chat.
- The Mess Room is the main conversation. If you were in the old General channel, its history is here too.
- Question of the Week is staying. It was already one of the busiest parts of the server, so changing it for the sake of a rebrand would have been daft.
- Creator Corner gives approved creators somewhere to share relevant videos, podcasts, articles, events and tools.
- There are also private peer rooms for students, NQPs and experienced clinicians. We're planning study sessions, guest talks and Q&As in the voice and Stage areas.
We have big plans for this space. We want to run regular study groups, CPD evenings and presentations.
Ask the daft question
Nobody sits you down and explains every radio phrase, abbreviation, placement habit or first-shift expectation. A lot of it gets picked up by quietly watching other people and hoping you haven't missed something obvious. Standby Point gives those questions somewhere to go.
We do need to be clear about the boundaries. Never share patient-identifiable details, and don't use Discord for live clinical advice. JRCALC, local policy and your service's clinical support routes are still the places to go for patient-care decisions.
There is no prize for making somebody feel stupid. Answer constructively or leave it for somebody who can.
Join the standby crew
Standby Point is free, forever, with no ads. SnapMedic powers it, but the app is optional. Use SnapMedic, use something else, or use no clinical app at all. It makes no difference to whether you belong there.
Have a look at Standby Point, read the house rules and, if it sounds useful, join the standby crew.
